The Chair of Biochemistry and Chemistry of Natural Products was founded in 1978 at the Institute of Chemistry, Faculty of Sciences University of Novi Sad. The first head of the Chair was prof. Dr. Olga Gašić. Lecturers and associates of the Chair participated in teaching of biochemical courses in scope of four-year chemistry studies (graduate chemist and chemistry professor) at the Faculty of Sciences, as well as at other Faculties at the University of Novi Sad. They were also engaged in master and doctoral biochemistry studies.

In the mid-nineties, a reorganization of teaching at the University of Novi Sad was under way, which involved the transition of a large number of lecturers from the Faculty of Sciences to other Faculties, which led to a significant reduction in the number of members of the Chair of Biochemistry and Chemistry of Natural Products. However, since 2001, after the introduction of the new study programs in BIOCHEMISTRY, there is a significant increase in the number of Chair members, as well as associated laboratories and new equipment for scientific research and experimental teaching. In the last 15 years, a large number of young students have gained the PhD in Biochemistry. From these young, talented researchers, the best were selected and today they make the majority of the Chair members and represent its most productive research potential.
